Intrigued as I am by windows, I ran across this wonderful Art Deco interior and could not resist remarking on the exceptional rich color used in the drapery treatments. They compliment this superb window without complicating the view.

Lush chocolate!

This, of course, is the famous Café Americain, the oldest Grand Café in the Netherlands. It was originally constructed in 1902 and is located inside the famous Amsterdam American Hotel. Isn’t is fantastic!!!

Café Americain is famous for its Art Deco interior, with the large arches, original Tiffany lamps and glass stained details in high windows. The wall paintings show the story of Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream.

Art Deco has always reminded me of “old” Hollywood (or “early” Hollywood, depending on your vantage point). Glamorous satin dresses, lavish cocktail parties, chrome, glass, wrought iron stairways, black and white tiled floors, Charlie Chaplin Rudolph Valentino, Cole Porter, Wall Street crash….oops, too much reality!

In my latest picture safari through the land of internet, I encountered some splendid examples of this classic influence which originated from the 1925 World’s Fair in Paris, France.

This custom designed rod by Blue Desert Interiors captures the atmosphere this Modernist response to the more elaborate Art Nouveau style. In the first photo, note how the wrought iron design cleverly mimics the two flanking half-round consoles on both sides of this lovely window.

Infamous, for its exotic and opulent Art Deco décor is Harrods, London which I had the exciting privilege of strolling through and the distinct disadvantage of not being able to afford anything!

The photo of this superbly styled chair I could not resist in snagging to add to my collection. The style, the color, the cording……..ahhhhhh!

The arched window provides such an attractive focal point in any room yet remains the most puzzling and difficult window to treat for light and privacy control.

Personally, I usually take the simplest path and let the window speak for itself rather than detract from its charm by trying “too hard” to adorn it.

This morning as I was perusing one of my

favorite web sites, Houzz, and I discovered

an article, “Cozy Elegance by the Lake”,

about one of my favorite local architects,

Visbeen Associates. This “stunning lakeside

home”, to quote directly, included a

marvelous photo of a favorite door of

mine, the Dutch door, and using it in

such sweet application.

“The girl's room are joined together with Dutch doors, which allows them to share the space and have privacy when needed.”

BRILLIANT!

The Dutch or split door can be traced back to the early 1600’s in the Netherlands and was mainly used (and is thought of today) as an exterior door. The top half could be open for fresh air while the bottom half kept dust, leaves, and the occasional animal from wandering in.

Today’s updated uses serve other purposes, both indoors and out. As Wayne Visbeen so aptly showed us, children’s bedroom doors are a perfect practical use as well as nursery doors, laundry room doors…… and well……any door!

Now this is one Dutch idea that can avoid

the proverbial derogatory joke!

Subtleties are just that –

The atmosphere they present is effortless and compatible: hazy coral, soft yellow green, faded rose, stonewashed blue and tinges of gray and green artfully set against a tasteful brown earthy red.

Pantone Resilience Palette

Transcending Time is a palette that speaks of continuity – inspirations from the past, both style and color-wise, which continue well into the future – containing hues that heirlooms are made of, including elegant wine and plum, warm beige and wood tones, as well as classic rose. A touch of frosted almond adds a soft and subtle glimmer to the atmosphere.

Pantone Back To Fuchsia

Bold, daring and audacious, this is a group of tantalizing colors that makes no excuses for the attention it creates. Back to the Fuchsia celebrates the energy generated through the provocative melding of dancing reds, purples and pink, all highlighted by a variety of fuchsias. Jewel-toned peridot both accentuates and complements the hotter hues.

Pantone Reflections Palette

Glossy finish and color are a magical coupling, fascinating the eye and riveting attention. Metallic or glassy surfaces undulate and move and twist and turn, taking colors to new dimensions. And coming from a window covering designer….I know this will sound strange….but I love the door to remain unadorned, bare, au naturale! It is lovely to surround the door opening by a lovely fabric that you could close for privacy if needed. However, the door itself, the sweet paned windows, should remain undressed…don’t you think????

The mention of oak leaves in our family always brings a giggle and groan out of each of the members.

The home that Grandma (or “Grams” to most of us) lived in since the 1930’s sits on a sizeable lot overhung by towering and numerous oak trees planted (I am sure) back when time began! Every autumn when the wind blew cold and finally brought down the last of the oak leaves, as many family members as were available would gather under the swaying giants and rake….and rake….and rake…and rake.

I cannot see an oak leaf and not be reminded of those marvelous days of laughter, children under enormous raked piles , the smell of the crisp leaves, the wonderful aroma of hot chocolate in Gram’s cozy little yellow bungalow, and her gracious giggle of delight to have us all tumble in her back door, leaves and all!

Grams was 99 years old when we buried her this week and our family spent sweet hours reminiscing countless stories over the five generations that came to honor her life. Just as the leaves keep falling this brisk autumn day and will for countless years to come, her legacy will go forth in our lives, our children’s lives, and their children’s live. That’s comforting!

This flax plant, from which REAL linen

is manufactured, has been used in textiles by

humans for over 10,000 years, if not more.

After the plant is dried and combed……

and spun into coarse yarn……

It is ready to weave into a multitude of linen

fabric types…

From which we crafty ones can indulge

our imaginations…..

and artistic talents…..

and fashion fancies……

express desires…..

and, of course, enfold our cherished surroundings in

a gift from Mother Nature!

I harvested my flower boxes for autumn and brought in to dry my…..

and I hung them in bundles above my studio work table.

The fragrance is so commanding, so overpowering.. …I am having trouble concentrating!!!

READING ROOMS…

I HAVE BEEN SO INTO READING AS OF LATE, I FIND I AM DRAWN TO THE “LIBRARY” SETTING. GIVE ME A GOOD BOOK, COMFORTABLE READING CHAIR, AND A WINDOW TO DREAM FROM….

OF COURSE, BIG WINDOW, BIG DREAMS…. NO READING!

SOFTEN A ROOM WITH FABRIC AND ADD A CHANDELIER AND I WILL STAY ALL DAY…..

I LOVE THE BRIGHT AND FRIENDLY GREEN DRAPERY PANEL AGAINST THE MULTITUDE OF COLORFUL BOOK BINDINGS AND THE INVIGORATING PATTERN IN THE RUG. A ROOM RIPE FOR SOFA SNUGGLING AND DIVING INTO A THRILLER WHO-DONE-IT!

MY FAVORITE, OUT OF SO MANY BEAUTIFUL ROOMS, WAS THIS COZY YET LIVELY LIBRARY EQUIPED WITH FLORAL CHINTZ SOFAS AND WELL CHOSEN PACHYDERM IN THE HOME OF ACTOR JIMMY STEWART. (elephants are a family favorite with us!)

YET, A CLOSE SECOND WAS THIS SOPHISTICATED AND LIVELY ROOM EQUIPED WITH CLASSY SWAGS AND KEPT CASUAL WITH WOVEN WOODS UNDERNEATH…..AND RED IS JUST SO FUN TO BE AROUND!

We have been humbled to work along side of many talented professionals and contribute in a small way to this fabulous design project in our city which will now serve to benefit the GREAT humanitarian organization of the American Red Cross. Marvelous designers, marvelous house, marvelous event!

Grand Rapids Magazine

The Jeffery Roberts design of this French farmhouse is arguably the most expressive artistic home design we've featured with our Design Home series. It's a must-see home exceeding anything one would find in a standard Parade-type event. And, we'll be raising money for a good cause. Has any charitable, volunteer organization worked harder than the Red Cross this year?
Reservations are required, as are comfortable shoes. We look forward to seeing you this week!

I have snapped my own photos so the colors are

poor however, these are a truly must see cotton and linen,

neutral palette of colors, and marvelous tactile sensation!

I know this seems a tad early to say……but we are looking at the back side of 2011. Before you know it….you guessed it…2012 will be knocking at the door.

The current 2011 design trend in colors will spill over into the new year with tweaked hues and individual flairs but I would venture to say, we will maintain our current tendency of creating comfy, casual living spaces to sooth our harried lives and to share with friends while entertaining.

Natural woven products like the Provenance Woven Texture Shades of organic materials are certainly here to stay and when paired with the marvelous textures and prints of the wide variety of environmental friendly fabric, we have a sassy, classy duo!

Silk fabric is another time tested winner that transcends decades of trends and keeps coming out on top.

This year the embroidered silks took the fabric industry by storm…….so much so that we were finding it difficult to locate “a plain ‘ol solid color” in (my favorite) tussah silk. Along with cotton fabric (of the eco-friendly variety), I consider silk “green” and of low eco-impact. Besides, I am so very tired of polyester I could scream! I am sure other designers out there share this same maddening dilemma!!!

I am always on the look out for a “real” linen fabric as well. You know the one – made of “real” flax fibers and dyed with organic dyes.

I imagine with more designers demanding “purity” of fabric, we will be able to locate these desirable weaves more readily. Yes, they do have their flaws and drawbacks, but they are REAL!!!! And in this current world of knock-offs and synthetics, REAL seems refreshing!

The older I get, the more REAL I like things……….well, the REAL older body is a bit hard to take…….but I’m adjusting!

Do you believe it is August already??????? Summer has sizzled by here in Michigan – busy, fun, memorable, hot, laughter, tears, graduations, engagements, births, deaths, struggles, triumphs, successes, failures – sound familiar? It is just that it all happened so quickly!!!

August is Michigan’s month for hot, steamy storms and beautiful sunsets.

For lush, fragrant flowerboxes full of lemon thyme……

and rosemary…….

indestructible roadside chicory….. (love that color!)

and, my favorite, black-eyed susan.

Designing window treatments for client’s this summer has been full of “adventure” as well. From “wake-up-in-the-middle-of-the-night” sweats – “DID I REMEMBER TO ORDER THAT TRIM???!!!” to “I am sorry! That fabric has been discontinued also!” (after weeks of searching every book in town!)

But really what has pulled me through these hot, sticky, sluggish days of summer and sleepless night’s of design projects have been the delightful, creative, deliciously, adventuresome posts of my blogger friends!

Ha! Encore une fois, je suis désolé de décevoir ! (I am sorry to disappoint) this is not about Toulouse, France. I would dearly love to give you insight to any city in France……but, alas, I have not been fortunate enough to visit…..yet!!

My “Toulouse” is again located in my favorite little hamlet in Michigan along that superb sandy coast of Lake Michigan. Yes, Saugatuck, Michigan has two delightful restaurants that we love to visit!!

Of course, it is not 248 Avenue des Champs-Elysees but rather more mundanely 248 Culver Street…..but none the less delightful.

Simple elegance of rich, hardwood shutters (one of my favorite window products to use in design) adorn the interior dining room of this “old world” restaurant, softening the light into a wistful and evocative aura of romantic elegance. Even if you didn’t know a lick of French….”C'est magnifique ” would roll off your tongue!!!

Outside, the atmosphere in the cozy courtyard is just as classic!

Nightly low lighting with an abundance of twinkle lights in bushes lining the building.

Vine covered trellis, trickling fountains…..oh…and yes, the food is great as well. It would be wonderful if the staff could speak French or even English with a French accent to complete the picture of illusion……but one cannot have everything!! This is still a delightful way to spend an afternoon or evening!

C'est formidable!

Eleanor’s Hydrangeas

This week my mother-in-law’s hydrangeas bloomed the loveliest I have ever seen them bloom. They crowd around the side entrance to her home, caressing your legs as you mount the steps. Enormously creamy white blooms you cannot help but bury your nose into!

We cut many beautiful stems to fill familiar old vases she has collected over the years. One for the usual centerpiece on her dining room table, one for great-grandma at the rest home, and one…… to sit beside her casket as we said our last goodbyes. They were her favorite flower. They were Eleanor’s hydrangeas.

We are moving forward enduring a void that can only be filled with the sweet memories we hold very, very close to our hearts.

We are breaking from our usual routines for a time to assist my mother-in-law in her transition from this life to the next. Each moment is preciously savored and brings life into sharper focus. Priorities are redefined, relationships are refreshed. Memories are shared, tears and laughter join hands, love covers all things. Life flows through these days very much alive and with such clarity even in the face of impending death. For now, my attentions are drawn to her side.

I am sorry to disappoint all of you Roman and Greek mythology buffs by leading you on entitling my post “Hercules”. No, this is not the intriguing story about the son of Jupiter and Alcmene.

This is about a superb restaurant located in Saugatuck, Michigan which we happened upon this last weekend and were enchanted and delighted about the atmosphere and menu!

Not only did their fenced gardened courtyard hold a superb array of flowers and a canopy of beautiful shade trees (where, of course, we ate, being the day was a gorgeous one),

but their screened porch was airy and elegantly softened by these summery grommet draperies.

Hercules also offers a more intimate setting indoors surrounding you with rich wall colors, soft lights and a rich flow of fabric draperies. Oh, did I mention the food was wonderful and the staff very friendly and eager to make sure your dining experience was memorable. Hats off to Hercules!

“In Our Dreams” Second Home…

Nestled up in the heart of Northern Michigan along Lake Michigan’s breathtaking Sleeping Bear Dunes lakeshore is a resort we lovingly (however, not legally) call our second home. The Homestead Fresh Water Resort is our “little piece of heaven.” A casual, laid back, relaxing coastal resort that we not only love to vacation at…but appreciatively assist in designing window coverings for.

We have spent summers swimming and sunning when the boys were growing up and winters skiing and drinking hot chocolate. We have tended to their window treatments as well as enjoyed their gracious hospitality in this marvelous “pinky” area of the Michigan mitten.

Every accommodation we have had, whether by the lapping waters of the lake front or high in the forested dunes of the Hawk’s Nest, has provided an experience we relive and relive for years to come.

We cannot really call it “work” when we are installing window coverings for the Homestead especially when being surrounded by such soothing natural beauty!

I know this sounds like a travelogue, but I have been freshly reminded of our Northern Michigan treasure recently as we are once again joyously assisting them with window coverings and will have yet another opportunity to gaze across “Michigami” as the Ojibwa referred to the “great water”. As the Homestead says, “If heaven’s full, this is a great second choice!”

As deeply as I love flowers, I am absolutely terrified of bees! I mean the ‘swinging wildly and frantically, running like a crazy woman for cover’ kind of terrified. Silly, I know!

I organize my shoes in my closet according to hours of endurance – that is how many hours I can endure wearing them in a single day. Of course, the “one hour” shoes are at the bottom of the shelf – pretty as they may be, they are only good for….let say….church! The “eight hour” shoes, my favorite Stewart Weitzman’s, are right by the door!!!

I drink Pinot Grigio……….with everything!!!

I eat popcorn….every night…….and not the healthy kind!!!

I can sit for hours and watch birds…….analyzing their behavior.

I dabble in watercolor painting…..poorly but lovingly!

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions!

Now that spring is waning and summer looks promising (even for us here in Michigan!), I am faced with the dilemma of what to plant in my flower boxes at the back entrance of my store. It is another gamble though not determined so much by the weather this time as by whether or not the plants will survive the caretaker – me!

I am ~~pathetic~~ unlucky when it comes to nurturing plants in any kind of environment. I can almost hear them weeping when I pick them up for purchase at the local floral nursery. They sense doom!

However, I love flowers…..

Geraniums are one of my favorites and they are fairly sturdy and hardy (as in not easy to kill) and always look so cheerful!

I like to add herbs like thyme……

and rosemary……the fragrance is wonderful wafting into the showroom when someone opens the door.

I already have Stella d’oro lilies successfully inhabiting my boxes now so these new additions should make a pretty mix…….if I can keep them alive!!! They must survive full sun and hot conditions off a black top parking lot, but we water them faithfully every morning, even making a special trip down on Sunday morning when the store is closed (or I should truthfully admit I send my husband down to water them!)

I would dearly love helpful hints as to the proper fertilizer to use for flower boxes and these types of flowers or any suggestions as to a better choice of flowers to plant……and, NO, I will not use plastic or silk flowers! (…….though I have in the past when a gapping hole is produced by an occupants death)

To Puddle or Not To Puddle……

We design and prepare numerous draperies and inevitably the client will ask “the question”. How long should the draperies be?

Now is that a loaded question or not?! You can examine all the aspects of the room’s style and design, take into consideration the fabric and pattern, contemplate the client’s lifestyle and room’s function, and then look them square in the eye…………….smile…and sweetly say “that is totally up to your preference….but let me give you a few suggestion".

Three hundred pictures later and an hour of “drapery lengths 101” you hopefully have assisted them in finding the look and length that they’ve envisioned in their room.

It is a agonizing decision that can supersede choosing the fabric pattern or pleat style.

When all else fails, I suggest a nice “trouser break” with the option of shortening if they find it isn’t quite what they imagined.

After all….in the grand scheme of things, it is one of the few things in life we can adjust and alter.

La Vie En……Lavender et Phlox!

I have been meaning to post for days…..you know the feeling when you have so much you want to share but NO time!!!! I am glad things are so busy in our lives…. don’t get me wrong, it is just that I feel I am neglecting my blogger friends with my silence.

I would like to share that my “gamble” to plant my flower boxes early did pay off as (to date) we have not had any extremely cold weather to harm my “preciousssss” (as Gollum would say).

Today was an pleasantly warm day here for us time of year and the phlox and lavender are thriving!!!

This word almost always, first and foremost, brings the image of our own mothers to mind. Of course! And the idea that we all (with the help of Hallmark) would set aside a special day to honor Mothers is sweet and loving!

Along with this, however, I would like to suggest two additional thoughts:

1. Let us keep this mind-set of honor each and every day throughout the year for these women who’s every thought is consumed with family and their happiness.

and….

2. We keep in mind all women, whether they have bore children or not, who embrace people around them with the heart and soul of a mother, who gather the lonely and lost, homeless and broken into their bottomless hearts for care, respect, and tenderness that only a “mother” could share.

Whether good or bad mothers, happy of sad memories, take this coming Mother’s Day and come to terms with the frailty and faults, beauty and the burdens of any impactful women in our lives. Whether it’s a time of honor…. or of releasing a painful past, make this coming “Mother’s Day” and every day after special in someone’s life.

BEAUTY….Inside and Out!

What a glorious day in West Michigan. Magnolias are bursting forth and I ventured out and planted creeping phlox and lavender in my flower boxes……just because I HAD to get my fingers in the dirt!!!

The soil smelled so rich and the lavender so fragrant

I know it’s early and always a gamble here in our climate zone as we know we could receive more cold, snowy weather……but today I was willing to risk!
It’s been a week of focusing on spring from all angles; not only weather and flowers but fabrics and new window treatment products from Hunter Douglas.

This week started in the windy city – Chicago! I love it!!!!!!! Unfortunately, we did not stay in the downtown area (which kept me from spending too much money shopping on Michigan Ave.). We stayed out in the west suburbs at the Chicago Westin Northwest. Superb hotel and superb dining!

One of the most exciting products shown this weekend was the Silhouette and the new sheer shading fabrics due to be introduced this May. This Silhouette fabric has a dupioni silk appearance that is absolutely elegant in color and texture!

We all love the beautiful way it softens light entering through the window. It’s not only beautiful….but smart too!! By providing ultraviolet protection, reflecting solar heat, it’s a perfect marriage of function and aesthetics.

There is so much too share…….but this is it for now because, you know, it is just tooooooo beeeeeautiful of a day outside. My copy of designer Roger Banks-Pye’s book, Interior Inspirations is tattered and worn, binding is splitting, pages creased from earmarks, and years of design comments written on every page. In other words….it is well used!!

No one does cozy elegant better than the British.

“The rooms are a bit eccentric with some hodge-podge thrown in, but they look like they evolved over time. These homes are not the American, brand-spanking new look.” as Jennifer Boles of BiblioStyle writes and I agree!

Roger’s sketches, complete with water color accents, detailed his imaginative designs and he never stopped experimenting with fresh ideas.

He detailed exactly every element of his project’s design, from color, fabric, measurements, method of construction….every degree of the plan was technically planned to produce the grand finale.

If you don’t own a copy of this marvelous book, you must add it to your library.

Isn’t this lovely?? Wouldn’t you love to be aboard that cruise ship lounging in the warm sun, sipping your wine (or whatever), throwing all cares overboard, slowly meandering toward Cozumel?

Yes! Me too!!!! However, I am not……. but my “right-hand woman”, my “assistant extraordinaire”, my “go to”, my “can do everything" , the "smiles & greets of the store” IS ON THAT BOAT!! Everyone who knows our business, knows Corie and her quick flash of a smile and extensive knowledge of every window treatment we have! She’s been with us……well…..forever and I miss her but hope she is having just a superbly relaxing and enjoyable week with the “girls” (mom, sister, aunts)! And I know she is thinking, “wish you were here Sue”. Yeah! Me too!!!!!!

THE ROLLER SHADE……redefined!

I am continuing from my last post with this seemingly boring subject as this is the time of year when we are inundated with roller shade questions, orders and repairs….and I thought maybe I would just share a few tidbits on this subject……then I’ll move on to something more interesting and beautiful!!!!!

The saying, “you’ve come along way, baby”, fits this product aptly. I spoke in my last post about the quirky attributes of the “original” roller shade apparatus – the spring tension roller. Yes, it can drive you mad but some people still somehow choose to buy and use it despite the warning labels of possible insanity!

However, crafty engineers have enabled us to progress far from the threat of straightjackets by developing a continuous cord clutch mechanism that raises and lowers the shade with such sumptuous ease!

Now I realize that I am not telling you something that you don’t already know as these have been on the market for quite some time. They have revolutionized the popularity of roller shades and new fabric options are exploding off the design table into the marketplace (and puhleeeze, I am not talking about the shade fabric with the imprint of your favorite sport’s team logo!)

These new fabrics being introduced each year are classy, with a variety of designs, colors, textures, and opacities.

Here is where I insert the big BUT……….not all roller shades clutches are made alike. Buyer beware……some manufacturers like to skimp on quality and will make you once again look in the attic for that straightjacket if you "”chose poorly.” Of course, if it is made by Hunter Douglas, you are wise and “chose well.”

Three bits of advice from someone who has held the tissue box for many a weepy client that bought ~~cheap~~ less expensive roller shades….. and I will say no more:

1. Wide shades, larger than 48” in width, should be put on large diameter rollers (more than 1 1/8”) and don’t let anyone tell you different!

2. Small or narrow shades should be put on large diameter rollers. Believe me…they roll straighter….even with a clutch. (I can see the nods of approval of those that have watched a narrow shade on a “skinny roller” track off center as they raise it. You know what I mean!)

3. Inexpensive fabrics on those inexpensive shades you purchased can stretch and warp….thus waving and fraying…..thus the weeping and gnashing of your teeth as you try to operate them. You get what you pay for!

THE LOVE-HATE RELATIONSHIP…..

No, I am not going psychological on you. I wouldn’t touch the human psychic with a ten foot pole! I am talking about our relationship with the spring tension roller shade………….we all know it! Its been around long enough that all of us, even the great ol’ wise designing wizards, will bow their shaking heads and sigh.

We love it for its simplicity and hate it for its temperamental operation. We love it’s clean lines. We hate that it won’t stop where we want. We love no pull cords. We hate bumping the spring and trying to wind it with a fork. See this picture above….how evenly they line up? …….one chance in a million!! !! I should have played the lotto that day!

I have seen this seemingly innocent apparatus unleash the wildest fury in men and bring women weeping and sobbing into my store. Its touchy spring and lightening quick release has scared the beegeebees out of people in the middle of the night and provided countless hours of entertainment for little hands who delight in seeing how long they can pull it down and how quickly it retracts once they let go! I don’t know who invented the roller shade spring but I guarantee he/she is still rolling in their grave with laughter!

I for one love the roller shade (as well I had better) because it is simple, has clean lines, makes a statements with or without the accompaniment of a drapery or valance, and most importantly, I am not particular as to where it stops on the window, which extricates most of the aggravation with this product. We ol’ wise ones (those of us who have worked through the “beating them on the ground” stage) have acquired a Zen-like understanding of the inner workings of these critters…….the secret lies with “the dogs”! The little “paws” that drop onto the pinwheel of a spring to stop or release its erratic motion. Stop in sometime and I’ll give you a glimpse into my crystal ball of roller shade secrets. You’ll be amazed at how easy they are to conquer!

THE GROMMET MOVEMENT--------

Whether square, triangle, round, large, small, medium, plastic, metal, or any color under the sun, this trendy drapery statement can be found in just about every design magazine on the market.

This grommet craze, of course, didn’t begin with draperies! The first record of a “ring or wreath of rope” from the French “gromette” dates back to 1626. However the first recorded “metal eyelet” dates to 1769. Grommets today are used all over the world from shoes and clothes to electrical and nautical applications, and….wonderfully…..for draperies!

Now with the application of outdoor finishes to drapery hardware, this grommet trend has “moved” its clean look and simplistic flare to porches, patios, gazebos and all types of sunrooms.

It’s a style that lends itself well to a variety of decors and its natural wave-like pattern is soothing aesthetically and displays fabric beautifully.

The latest for interior use of this ringed drapery has been the invention of a new drapery rod which enables traversing of a grommet drapery!

Isn’t this cool???? No more “flinging” the drapery across the rod and eventually tearing that front grommet loose from the fabric! It uses a beaded cord pull system but comes only split draw (which is its only draw back – no pun intended!)

See how cleverly it mounts into each clip for the seemingly easiest “movement” of a grommet drapery you’ll ever have.

Confession time………I have never used this product!

However, in my defense of writing about something I know nothing about, I have used many ~~contraptions~~ drapery rods and it does appear for some applications this clip rod would traverse a grommet drapery smoothly and evenly with virtually no fabric contact! It seems like an excellent answer to problems encountered when using grommets draperies on tall windows or covering large expanses……

Question time……… Has anyone ever used this or something like it? Feedback is always appreciate and I would love to hear about your experiences, good or bad, and pass it along so we can all benefit from it’s use or save ourselves from calamity!!

Anyway….it seems like one answer, but as H.L. Mencken said, “for every complex problem, there is an answer that is clear, simple,……and wrong!”

Here is another snippet of great information I found while researching. Check out the link I found it on to the right called You Are My Fave.

The title of Christiane Lemieux’s book, which she wrote with Rumaan Alam, “Undecorate” ($40, Clarkson Potter), is a bit deceptive. While the 20 spaces shown may not be “decorated” in the traditional sense, they are very stylish.

“These people do have very sophisticated taste,” said Ms. Lemieux, the founder and creative director of DwellStudio. “And they are constantly tweaking their interiors. Now, with interior design, there is no start and finish. People are always changing, sharing, getting their friends to weigh in on it.”

Ms. Lemieux credits the Web in large part for the phenomenon of interiors that evolve and reflect the owners in a stylishly imperfect way: “It used to be the people with the super-cool eclectic houses went to estate sales and got a first look at everything. Now you have access to a very cool flea market, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The popularity of that eclectic interior is because it’s achievable now.”

It is wonderful to watch the rain, see the lightening, hear the thunder……because it is a sure sign of spring and IT’S MELTING THE SNOW!!! Those wonderful sunny days we had just before this downpour, however, were so perrrrfect for curling up in the sunshine pouring through the window and it actually felt too warm at times…..like I needed to lower the shade down a touch….and roman shades are perrrrfect for doing just that!

Whatever the style….roman shades are one of my favorite window treatments. They can add texture and personality to your window and imbue a room with added flair and color! They can be made in a wide variety of styles and with a wide array of fabrics. Most important to remember, however, is that you GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! If you want quality and excellence in workmanship, then prepare to spend a few extra dollars because it will be well worth the look, the safety, and the ease of operation!
The latest word on Roman Shades has been all about the dangers and hazards associated with child strangulation due to the loose operating cords on the back of the shade. It is something to take very seriously and ensure that the shade you purchase has safety measures to avoid this tragic possibility.

The above information and illustrations are from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (http://www.cpsc.gov/) Publication #5115.

For all of you that have existing roman shades like the one above, please be aware that these rings (which look just like shower curtain rings to me) can be used to replace the cords in your shades. By inserting them through each ring in place of the cord, you can raise and lower the shade….. manually……yes, by hooking and unhooking these rings each time you raise and lower the shades. If it seems time consuming and confusing, you are right! It is a pain…. but does avoid a potential threat to your child.

Otherwise, you can have them redone by a workroom professional to include these new cord shrouds (shown above) which prevent the cord from being pulled away from the shade and around a wee one’s neck!

Of course, the best and ultimate innovations (if I must say so myself) are from Hunter Douglas and have given us the opportunity to totally eliminate a cord lift from roman shades within the Vignette line of products and the completely covered back totally encases the working cord preventing accessibility from children’s little hands!

With the new Design Studio Roman Shades by Hunter Douglas, you have a superb selection of over 300 fabrics, from sheers to prints, to select from. This collection does have to safe lift cords to choose from and can be made up to 96” in width with NO, yes, NO seams! These fabrics can even be used of valances over the roman shades or all my themselves. You can make your own design statement. Pretty cool!

However, as I am ending this post, the cold weather has returned, sleet is falling as well as the snow, temperature forecasts are for blustery winds and just plain turn-that-heater-up conditions! Oh….did I mention that “lowering that roman shade a touch” is perrrrrrfect for that too?

March is sooooooo difficult to endure because it is so very close to spring yet this month keeps spring just an agonizing arm’s length away!!! It is like sitting and watching the clock, waiting for the minutes to pass in anticipation of a wonderful moment. Well, as one designer said to me with all seriousness this week, “God promised me spring will come!”

In the waiting hours, we can take stock of the new 2011 Spring Pantone colors that will grace our fabric books and clothing racks.

Now, I have to admit, I have a love/hate relationship with this year’s palette. Maybe I‘ve lived in Michigan too long but I would rather work with them in my closet than on the walls, windows coverings, or furniture in my client’s home. This palette is not as enduring as my favorite shades of these color families and seem to tire my eyes easily. Bright and fun for spring and summer but then I’ll be ready to move on!

Now before you tell me I am sounding old and frumpy, I’ll have you know that there is nothing like a playful spring fling (let me clarify….with the color palette!) to invigorate, energize, add pizzazz to our seemingly dreary decors this time of year. However, I know by fall I will be ready for the deeper versions of these colors……and Kravet has already got that covered.Please add e-news@kravetpromo.com to your address book.

However, if I must choose, I do have a couple of favorites like this blue below! But I dare say it might be because of the dress! Pamela Roland by Pamela DeVos. I knew you recognized her sleek , flirtatious style!

Regatta Pantone 18-4039 does have a very calming appeal as Cyril Foiret says and who doesn’t like blue!

Blue Curacao Pantone 15-4825 reminds me of a “softer version of turquoise” as described by 10rooms.BlogSpot.com which by the way is a super blog.

Then there is Silver Peony Pantone 12-1206 and Silver Cloud Pantone 15-4502!

Peony is also a beautiful shade in the Hunter Douglas Duette Architella cellular shade collection where we can enjoy our spring palette and have energy efficiency also!

A color also finding favor is Beeswax Pantone 14-0941 even though the mere mention of “bee” sends me swatting and running for cover.

I love honey and I love this version of yellow. I love warm tones and I love that yellow is making such a come back in our design palettes.

Well, if pressed, I would have to say Coral Rose Pantone 16-13349 is another growing favorite. idesignlove.com

It just sounds beautiful and exotic, doesn’t it? Imagine this warm orange paired with black & white zebra stripe!

Again, Hunter Douglas carries a very similar color of Mandarin Coral in their Duette Ariosa honeycomb shade collection. Who says smart energy solutions need to be boring?

I can’t help but like this color, Russet Pantone 18-1235 as it reminds me of chocolate pudding and makes such a yummy backdrop in this picture.

Next to last… but not least….well, yes, maybe least is Lavender Pantone 15-3817 and Peapod Pantone 14-6324/However, you have to admit that silver and silk in the photo below does make the lavender appear enticing….

Fortunately for Peapod it photographs better than it really is…….and it is a version of green…..and a sign of spring!

Now….last AND least is Honeysuckle Pantone 18-2120. I could not even find an interior photo that I wanted to post. Sorry all you pink lovers.

Well maybe I’ll feel “good” after I take my Pepto-Bismol which I am tempted to rename “Honeysuckle Juice”!

Remember a few months back when I mentioned that it seemed ch-ch-ch-changes were happening everywhere we turned….with people, with places, with products? Some good, some bad….all just a part of everyday life but difficult to keep up with all the same, especially when they come quickly and unexpectedly. Remember the penguins in the animated movie Madagascar? “Just smile and wave boys. Just smile and wave!” February is a tough month psychologically anyway let alone when changes leaves me frayed & frazzled. So I offer this wonderful little thought to all of you who are also facing a difficult change:Think spring too!!!!

A good change has been made by Hunter Douglas and is in answer to the new child safety measures taking place in the window covering industry. On each product that is appropriate and on their new line of roman shades, Design Studio, the exposed cords on the back of the shade are encased in a “shroud” that eliminates the possibility of children pulling it a dangerous distance from the shade and looping it over their heads.

They have also made this change on their Provenance woven wood products. Their Vignette Modern Roman Shade line (shown below) has always been manufactured with a completely covered backside (being shown on the left) avoiding access to the lifting cords and giving it a more appealing appearance from the outside!!!

Remember…. “curb appeal” ladies!!!

SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW....

Everytime a new year begins, I feel a little like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz skipping excitedly and cautiously down the yellow brick road singing "we're off to see the wizard...." not quite knowing what lies ahead but determined at least to take the next step. Yes, we have to leave Munchkin Land behind (aka - the old year which was a little weird to begin with) and forge ahead to the Emerald City in search of a way back home (aka - better economic times with black bottom lines). With Dorothy's wide eye naiveté and determination to keep searching for a way back home, she is fortunate enough, like all of us, to collect along the journey a unique collection of friends who support, encourage and sustain her struggling attempts and, as we all know well, her final success!

Now, if you are still with me through that attempted analogy of my current state of mind, I thank you.... and hope that you are one of those unique friends we all hope to have acquired along the way on this precarious road into this new year. All reports I have been reading..... from Gail Doby, ASID, co-founder and Chief Vision Officer of Design Success University..... to Bunny Williams, a design icon, author, speaker, business woman extraordinaire, the ol' Magic 8 ball is predicting "outlook good"! By the way, both links to their great articles can be accessed to the right under "Enlightened Links".

January is that painfully-slow, hold-your-breath-hoping-that-February-picks-up, what-is-the-balance-on-my-credit-line type of month that we are happy to have over! Yet it is also a month to assess the mistakes and excesses of the old year, make plans and plot changes for the new year, and find that plucky courage to start enthusiastically skipping down the yellow brick road once again.

Autumn is perhaps my most favorite time of year (but I might have said that about spring also!) That is why I love Michigan, I get to experience so many different wonderful aspects of all the seasons! Autumn, by one definition I read recently is "a period of maturity verging on decline." Reminded me of the age I find myself at these days!! I'd rather refer to autumn (and my age) as a time of respite, reflection, reorganization & renewal. "Change" is the buzz word appropriate for this time of year and we have certainly seen it occur in the life of our friends at Israel's! People erroneously surmise that this news of a competitor's collapse makes me happy, however, I want to declare that indeed it does not! With the closing of Israel's doors also closes a long-standing chapter on Grand Rapids' design history, closes a chapter on a family's generous philanthropic outpouring into a community that is very beholding, and closes the doors on yet another empty building with the rippling effect of lost jobs, lost incomes, and lost hopes for many people. No one likes to see a noble giant fall, crippled and humbled. It breaks my heart for their loss and ours as a community. I can only hope the their years of longevity has produced enough maturation and wisdom to spring forth from this rubbled respite with reflection, reorganization & renewal!

Now that September has arrived, we all know what follows next.....and quickly. Yes, the HOLIDAYS! I find myself mentioning that often to my clients, and not as subtly as I probably should..... but I do not feel like encountering the last minute, need-it-next-week deadlines this season. Therefore, I am preparing my clients ahead of time that decorating "times-a-currently-wasting!"

One of the more popular color trend we've been seeing this year in our drapery projects is the varying degrees of purple and its deeper "plum" cousin. I do believe this wonderful plum delight will follow us right into the holiday season of Christmas with it's also popular companions of chocolate brown, warm grays, and red-cast blues. I see pink/plum and gray/silver sparkles adorning ornaments, smell plum puddings being baked, hear the lilting music of the "Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy", and have "visions of sugar plums dancing in my head"! Well, at least at my house that is what will be happening! My granddaughters will see to that!!

Another very popular trend we've been encountering in 2010 is the demand for motorization options in window treatments. This is an issue we find that people tend to shy away from due to the technical knowledge that is required. After all, who keeps abreast of which intelligent motor control will be needed for remote, keypad, or automated operations???? Well....we do! Beach, Babies & Summer Sunsets!

I am positive that I will not be alone when I say, "Where has this summer gone?" Next week will hail in the beginning of August and mark the close of our Michigan summer season. I've been immersed in slow, lazy summer living and haven't even bothered blogging (as I have noticed has been the case with many of my blogger friends). It is break time, after all.....vacations, change in the usual routines, time to enjoy the opportunity of Michigan's out-of -doors in warmth and sunshine and we sure have had plenty of that, haven't we?

Hopefully, you have had a chance to view at least one or two of the gorgeous northern Michigan sunsets this season or at least stayed at the Lake Michigan shoreline until the day's end to drink in the beauty of the magnificent and dramatic display the sun provides as it disappears below the horizon.

Frankly, I haven't had the chance to do many of the pastimes I treasure most as business has claimed much of my attention. I have seen many of you in my store and have heard similar comments, yet we are all grateful for the business our clients bring us during these tight times. Cottages, vacations, grandchildren, parades, fireworks, ice cream and watermelon still have managed to squeeze themselves in thankfully and there is still some time left for those of us who haven't quite had our fill.

So, forgive me if I don't have anything design-worthy to say at this time as the summer has claimed my brain and pulled my attentions else-where and this wonderful dilema will continue at least for a month more...as I hope it will for you! See you in September!

The other day as my husband and I were out driving through our fair city, we saw the car in front of us throw some form of litter out their car window. Disgust was my immediate reaction! As we pulled into our store's parking lot, we noticed some adults lingering outside the back entry of a neighboring business smoking and flicking their butts to the ground. Are they mindless? Who in our society these days, with the knowledge of our human impact on earth, can do such a thing?

Well, fortunately, once into work, my first opened e-mail was Rapid Growth Media (an e-publication that keeps me up to date on current Grand Rapids' events) and there, countering the ugliness of the human spirit I had just seen, was a wonderful and inspiring article on Eden Environments. For those of you who don't know yet (and I can hardly believe there are many) Denise Hopkins, founder of this sustainable building design center, cares! From what she does, what she sells, who she is....this woman cares about making our environments healthy and our earth whole! I have been impressed with her genuine quest for the best sustainable solutions for her clients and have enjoyed thoroughly working with her on various projects. Denise also had an article in May's Women's Lifestyle (another media piece I love to read cover to cover) and I hope she continues her focus on educating each one of us on the alternatives in design that are at our fingertips.

She has recently moved her business to a renovated warehouse on Grand Rapids' south side which, as author Deb Johnson Wood of Rapid Growth stated perfectly, "exemplifies the eco-friendly mindset that she and her business are all about". "Hats off, Denise! Well done!" say I.

You can find her link to the right under My Favorite Things and I dare you to peek. Her enthusiam is contagious...so beware! You might find yourself unable to settle for anything less than green.

Before I knew it, I began searching our window covering products for Green stylish solutions. They were there all the time but just not in the fore front of my mind! Hunter Douglas has an alternative wood blind called First Edition which is PVC free, certified Greenguard (indoor air quality safe) and stills performs well in heat and sun with quality construction and all backed by Hunter Douglas' Lifetime Guarantee! Who knew?

We are all aware as well (if not, please call me!) that the Duette Architella cellular shade does qualify for a possible $1500 tax credit for 2010. These shades are well known for being top of the line in energy efficiency and void of off-gassing (for you air quality control green police out there). The patented honeycomb within a honeycomb construction form three air pockets for superior insulation between the window and the room.

This season, Hunter Douglas, has also produced a new cellular shade in their Applause line (in their spectacular new sample book) called Vintage. This fabric is 40% post-consumer recycled materials! I love it! You can have fashion choices, pricing options and be earth friendly!

Opportunities are there for us to present more earth friendly and people friendly products to our clients. It doesn't take much effort these days as these products are making such a loud impact in our marketplace. Consumers are becoming more educated and are demanding smarter products as well. CHARMING YELLOW

We surely didn't need to conjure the sight of daffodils in our mind's eye this month, did we? Everywhere I looked, yellow was blooming; from daffodils to forsythia - another "happy" flower of spring! Even tulips were on the verge of popping their petals open!

Yellow is also my four year old granddaughter's favorite color - at least this month it is. Favorites can change on a whim at four years old. However, yellow does seem to be a favorite in this year's color scheme, and all shades of yellow as well. "Yellow is the color of flowers, lemons, and sunshine. Envision also, ears of corn and vanilla pudding hues offering fresh appeal in each of its many variations," states a Martha Stewart columnist. According to Benjamin Moore experts, depending on the amount of red or blue it contains, yellow can have different personalities. Yellow with a red undertone are warm and welcoming, so they're great on large pieces of furniture and walls - "especially in north-facing rooms that might otherwise feel stark," says New York City decorator Thomas Jayne. Yellows with a hint of blue can come off as cold, so they're best used sparingly, on accessories or small furnishings. Jayne suggests keeping bright yellows out of bedrooms and offices, because they can disrupt sleep and concentration. But pale, buttery yellows "function as neutrals," he explains and can work just about anywhere.

In this space, golden yellow wallpaper, hand painted with botanical motifs that evoke this house's Low country setting, envelops the entry. The color immediately sets a genial welcoming tone for the rest of the house.

"I think yellow is a fundamental color to decoration because it's the basis of a warm palette," says designer Thomas Jayne. "Most people respond to rooms painted in warm colors."

Jayne feels that with yellow's versatile nature and sunny-side-up appeal, it is little wonder that yellow is a perennially popular choice for interiors.

"I like a buoyant, light-filled house, so I usually use all warm or yellow-based colors. This ocher is really a contemporary yellow shade with an antique resonance. It doesn't draw attention to itself as, say, bold yellow or even white would. The ocher walls provide support for the exceptional paintings and furniture. Bright-colored walls would visually compete. This shade flatters everyone -- it complements every skin tone." designer Thomas Jayne

Hunter Douglas has introduced some gorgeous yellows into their window covering line. The Silhouette line carries fabrics with luscious names as Vanilla Blossom, Champagne, and Buttercup. The Duette and Applause cellular shades tempt us with Iced Lemon, Honey Maple, and Lemon Meringue. You must stop by to see these gorgeous shades!

I must admit that yellow has never been a color that I have been drawn to except as its use in accents, however, this year I seem more attracted to its sunny personalities and softer sides........or maybe it's because it is my granddaughter's favorite color this month and I find myself loving anything she does.

Vincent van Gogh himself termed yellow "a color capable of charming God." That's exactly what my granddaughter does to me!!

So the "little groundhog" has determined six more weeks of winter , eh! That's not the determination I was hoping for! February is notoriously referred to as "frozen", "dreary", or "bleak". (However, notice that in french the title "The frozen month of February" sounds absolutely delicious!)
I guess that is why in February I begin to look for the new colors that have been predicted to appear in 2010. I look forward to the new fabric sample books that will be arriving in my showroom with the latest textures and color combination. Greenhouse Fabrics books should be arriving any day with this year's latest and greatest colors and Carole Fabrics (a Hunter Douglas company) has just posted their gorgeous new web site, carolenet.com, which is definitely worth a look.

Color predictions for textiles in 2010, I am happy to say, are bold and bright, and will incorporate the use of environmentally friendly, organic fabrics. Geometric prints in bold patterns - herringbone, ikats and bargello - will take the spotlight according to Robyn Griggs Lawrence, editor-in-chief, of Natural Home. Bargello, you say? I had to look that unfamiliar one up. Bargello is a needlepoint embroidery stitch that produces zigzag lines.
Purple is remaining in the palette and gray will also continue to figure largely. Color authority Pantone has named turquoise its color of the year for 2010. "Turquoise combines blue's serenity with green's invigoration, soothing us and restoring our sense of well-being." Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute says it this way:
"In many cultures, turquoise occupies a very special position in the world of color. It is believed to be a protective talisman, a color of deep compassion and healing, and a color of faith and truth, inspired by water and sky. Through years of color word-association studies, we also find that turquoise represents an escape to many - taking them to a tropical paradise that is pleasant and inviting, even it only a fantasy."
Makes me want to head straight for Mexico! Si?
Even Hunter Douglas window fashions have introduced rich and unexpected color combinations in their product lineups. Names like, rich mocha, shiraz, spice, and cumin describe the Duette palette, while parisian summer, french roast, and fired clay draw our attention to the Silhouette line.
One trend that has fluctuated over the years but is back in 2010 are antiques. Old is new again! "Antiques and vintage pieces add soul to any space, " explains interior designer Jay Jeffers. I love that description! It's like another whole spiritual dimension comes with an antique piece!
So February is beginning to hold some promise - color is on our horizon - even for the landscape and definitely for interior design! Roy R. Gibson says it best: "Keep your faith in beautiful things; in the sun when it is hidden, in the Spring when it is gone."

As tacky as this might seem, I am going to repeat my Christmas greeting from last year. No, not because I am lazy nor cheap! I have one very good reason. It means more to me this year than it did the past year when I originally sent it. I have read and reread it through this past year and let it sink deep into my heart. I have tried walk out each phrase and be true to its message, often times failing. However, I believe with all my heart it bears repeating, bears sharing, bears encouraging all to make it part of the road they travel.

There is something hauntingly beautiful and peaceful about November's bare trees. They stand against the cold and driving, late autumnal winds while stripped bare of their leafy attire and they dare winter's sleet and snow to dislodge the life that remains dormant and unseen within... That is pretty much like the retailer facing the economic crisis of the upcoming Christmas season, don't you think? Don't misunderstand, I am hopeful - even determined to survive and prosper. Never say DIE!!! But...I am also a realist and realize that this upcoming Christmas season is the largest mountain to climb I've seen yet!

That is precisely why when Denise Hopkins of Eden Environments hosted a Elements of Harmony workshop presented by Jenna Boyd, a Feng Shui Consultant, I leaped at the opportunity to gain understanding of creating a more balanced environment - and I dragged my husband with me! We, personally and work-wise, were definitely going to need all the help we could get!

Now you might be surprised to find that I really knew very, very, very little about Feng Shui, even though I am in the interior design field. I do feel that I loosely practice a version of balance based on design principals, but the actual understanding of Feng Shui eluded me. Jenna calmly and clearly explained Chi, Yin and Yang, the concept of the Five Principals of Water, Earth, Metal, Wood and Fire, and helping clients find harmonious solutions of design within their living environment - all while I sipped on the most exquisite water mixture of .....yes, water, with cucumber, mint and a hint of rosemary!!! (Denise, that was definitely better than lemon!!!)

By the end of the workshop, after viewing some of the incredible sustainable design materials that Eden Environments carries and how they perfectly partner with Feng Shui principals that Elements of Harmony promote, I was on the road to a more balanced and equipped ability to assist my clients in design decisions. I also knew that I had just acquired "something" that I, personally, could utilize in my own world. In other words, I GOT IT!

I understand that I still have a lot to learn of the Eastern school of thought; after all, I am a Westerner, but I will try my best to empty my mind of preconceived assumptions and embrace a practice that has enabled an ancient culture to continue to survive thousands of years on this earth. Perhaps, just perhaps, it might allow me to survive one more Christmas retail season!

I have no favorite color scheme! Every Michigan season beckons me to redecorate with the colors that surround me. This October, with its deep hues, earth tones and touches of spice is no exception! Look at this wonderful mix of colors in this picture of autumn leaves. I desire to be surrounded by the warmth of deep woodsy greens, mixes of pumpkin, orange and chocolate, with sprinkles of brick red. Alas, my budget will not allow me to change my decor that often. So this autumn, I guess I'll be content with baking a pumpkin pie, place bittersweet sprigs in my tall glass vase filled with pine cones, and call it "cozy". (There is not much room for anything more in this small apartment!)

By the way, these gorgeous colors shown here are by Valspar Paint, which I whisper, as we were once Benjamin Moore paint dealers. However, I must give due where due is deserved.

September and October have been busy with fabric - drapery panels and bedding. From simple and functional to unusual and detailed, draperies add pattern, texture and personal touch! I liked the way one designer described them to me. "They either hide a sight or accent a view!" Draperies not only provide glamour to a room's decor but insulation value which is a big buzz word this winter. Bedding is extremely easy to transform with duvets and shams! Accent pillows are easy to come by with leftover fabric and trim. I have found a artistic "gem" whose sewing creativity is phenomenal!

This autumn has been inspiring working along side of so many of you in your areas of expertise, getting familiar with your businesses, and sharing different aspects of a client's design project. I have learned much and appreciate so your trust and confidence in our talents. Thank you!

Whoooosh!!! I totally missed August! I pulled my face out from the book I was reading (Learning to Breathe by Alison Wright-an excellent book that I am on my second time through!) to discover September was here and retail was back in full swing. August, notorious for being a slow, low month in retail due to vacations, had collapsed thankfully into the beginnings of autumn and holiday planning. Many of you are hoping along with me that our clients will continue to gain confidence in our economy and allow us to assist them in freshening their interior spaces. Hunter Douglas is sporting new product colors and materials, fabric suppliers are sending out new books of gorgeous colors and coordinates, and seminars have given us the latest trends and sale techniques . We now just need our clients to feel the need, any need, to freshen up, add to, or totally overhaul existing decor.

We have worked along side many of you, in a team approach, to bring the client the best of our individual expertise. Networking has helped all of us support each other, learn from one another, and offer our clients a full array of interior design services. It is always a win-win combination for all concerned. Since our design expertise centers on window decor, we are continually asked by our clients for designer referrals for other areas of their home (i.e. space planning, furniture selection, etc.) I am thankful to many of you who have supplied me with their business cards to hand out and for those of you who have web sites to direct these potential customers to. Lazy Days of Summer?

I am amazed that July is so near to being over! It has been a fast and full month of ups and downs, work and play, singing and sadness. Barry (husband) and I are still settling in to our new abode but so very pleased our condo sold so fast, especially in this market. We're experimenting with downtown living and finding we love its walkability and urban appeal. There certainly are many condos on the market downtown to choose from and priced very well right now. However, we found the square footage is much, much, much smaller and that posed a problem for my beautiful Bernhardt Martha Stewart four poster bed. This is from her Seal Harbor collection and has spire-like posts that went wonderfully in our post tray-ceiling bedroom. Alas, we have no tray ceiling now! So, I am offering up my gorgeous bed frame for sale....to the highest bidder, of course. It is queen size which makes its dimensions 68.125"Wx91"Dx90.25"H. Now those spire post do screw off half way down for portability but there is nothing light weight about this bed. It is built to last! It has an antique cherry finish and is only about five years old. Please direct any offers to me (Susan) at the store.

Now I also must let you know that we carry a line of hand blown glass art from local artists that range in objects from jewelry to vases, from beverage glasses to soap dishes. These artists are from the Burning Tree Studio and offer pieces using a variety of techniques including blown, fused, torched and stained. I am fortunate to have talked them into displaying their work here at my store during their off-blowing summer months and between craft shows. BLOOMING JUNE!

June is peony month! They are blooming in a multitude of colors, drooping heavy on bushes lush with green leaves. Grandmother's yard is overflowing with these fragrant (and ant covered) showy perennials and a visit to her garden is a feast for the eyes and nose!

I am sure that fabric designer Anne Selke's inspiration for her latest line of pattern and color has been born from a walk through Grandmother's garden. (I would dare say that she is a peony lover!) Her vibrant colors are a feast for the eyes and delightful to use in demure dabs or bold statements. Greenhouse Design showcases her many fabrics on line for ease of access while researching.

Another summer inspiration is the new Hunter Douglas Vignette Tiered Roman Shade with a cordless operation in 34 new colors! This "stackable" design does not roll up into a headrail like its predecessor, but actually stacks like a classic roman shade. Best of all, you have the option of no cords! Stevie's Room

The Home of the Month in May's issue of Grand Rapids Magazine featured beautiful photos of an East Grand Rapids' home that we had the privilege of supplying window coverings for. Home owner and designer Margaux Drake had prepared to perfection each room of this lovely home, however, not all the photos could be included in the magazine layout. One room in particular that I enjoyed photographing was her son's room, Stevie. Perhaps because I raised two boys of my own, I was drawn to the more masculine elements and colors of this room. Also, I had the opportunity to view this room when it was utilized prior as Margaux's office and studio. The neutral color draperies and textured woven woods of the office decor remained a warm and cozy backdrop for her son's sanctuary. The punch of vibrant color in the striped bed covering was the "icing of the cake". The transformation to Stevie's room is delightful, bright and cheery!

May is just around the corner and I am so excited. It is one of my most favorite months of the year. We will leave April's mainly moist weather and emerse ourselves in May's continuing greening and blooming blossoms. May causes me to throw open the windows, fill the flower pots, and rearrange every room in the house. This May I can also look forward to the Grand Rapids Magazine's Home of the Month feature which we, The Shade Shop, have been laboring all winter to produce with the gracious help of our dear designer friend, Margaux Drake of The M.Drake Co. She generously opened her home and let us share in its gorgeous transformation by supplying all the window coverings pictured in the magazine spread. We are thankful to all the talented hands that were involved in this project. An especially BIG thank you to Jessica Maycroft of Slipcovers Plus Home Decor who waved her magic wand and literally made the elegant taffeta draperies appear overnight. (Pictures will be forthcoming to my site as soon as I purchase rights!) It was an amazing project resulting in amazing pictures by Johnny Quirin and a superb story by Brenda Cook. Such work, such scary deadlines, such fun!

Adios Good Friends

I am sure you all have heard by now that our designer "haven of help", Michigan Design Resources, is closing its doors. Another sad victim of this present economy and a sad loss to our design trade family. We will miss the friendly and inviting atmosphere of their cozy operation and the welcoming smiles that always greeted us from each staff member. Fortunately, it is not disappearing completely, but being absorbed by our giant friend in the industry, Israels Designs For Living, who will combine it with their John Widdicomb Trade Center operation. Fortunate, also, for us is the fact that the staff at MDR will carry on as Design For Living employees and we will continue to enjoy their expert knowledge and friendly, helpful personalities. All of us wish MDR the very best as they morph into their new roll within the trade giant, Israels, and look forward to the new & fresh flavor of assistance and hospitality it will bring to the Design For Living team.

I don't know about you, but I need a little bit of fun color right about now! It has been rainy and dreary! I have been looking at dirty snow melting on dirty ground and longing for a sprig of "pretty" color to appear. Spring is around the corner but I know it will be just a while before "spring color" arrives. Greenhousedesign.net has fantastic new Lifestyle Collection available for viewing.
